SHPS recognized as a Start! Fit-Friendly company
Louisville, Ky (May 19, 2011) — SHPS announced today it has been recognized as Start! Fit-Friendly company, an award given by the American Heart Association’s Start! initiative. The award honors companies that demonstrate progressive leadership by making the health and wellness of its employees a priority. SHPS was awarded gold level status for fulfilling the following parameters:
- Offering employees physical activity support;
- Providing/Increasing healthy eating options at the worksite;
- Promoting a wellness culture; and
- Implementing at least nine criteria as outlined by the AHA in the areas of physical activity, nutrition, and culture.
"We are extremely honored and excited to be recognized by the American Heart Association," said J.C. Gibson, SHPS' executive vice president, human resources. "Physical activity and employee wellness are high priorities at SHPS. This award and the success of our wellness program called Health Happens Here is evidence that our associates take health seriously, and recognize the value in making healthy decisions for themselves and their family."
Some of the specific activities that resulted in the award being granted to SHPS include indoor/outdoor walking paths at multiple offices; "Fitness Fridays," where employees are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes to work so they can take walks during break; a renovated on-site cafeteria menu that eliminated fatty foods and replaced them with healthier options; and a Farm to Table program which allowed local farmers to come on-site and sell fresh produce, meats, and fruits directly to employees.
The Start! Fit-Friendly Companies Recognition Program calls on all Americans and their employers to create a culture of physical activity and health to live longer, hearty-healthier lives through walking. Designed to be a catalyst for change in American business, the program recognizes employers who champion the health of their employees within the workplace.
