The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) allows a wide range of health-related products and services to be covered by a healthcare FSA. Below are some examples of eligible and ineligible healthcare expenses. These examples are NOT a comprehensive list of expenses. The SHPS Eligible Expense Guide provides a detailed list of allowable expenses for both the healthcare FSA and dependent care FSA.
Please note: Eligible expenses may vary slightly by employer. Please check your employer’s plan documents for any restrictions.
Examples of Eligible Healthcare Expenses:
- Co-payments for medical, dental, and vision plans
- Expenses below the deductible amount for medical, dental, and vision plans
- Co-insurance expenses
- Prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines
- Eye exams, eye glasses, contact lenses and solutions
- Vision correction surgery
- Dental exams, cleanings, x-rays and fillings
- Orthodontia
- Expenses in excess of medical, dental, or vision plan limits
- Acupuncture, chiropractic expenses, physical therapy
- Child birth preparation classes
- Diabetic supplies, respirators and other medical supplies
- Hearing aids
- Immunizations and vaccinations
- Smoking cessation programs, nicotine patches and gum
- Counseling and psychotherapy
- Routine physical exams and annual check-ups (pap smears, prostate, mammograms)
Examples of Ineligible Healthcare Expenses:
- Cosmetic expenses
- Expenses claimed on your income tax return
- Expenses not eligible to be claimed as an income tax deduction
- Expenses reimbursed by other sources, such as insurance companies
- Fees for exercise/athletic/health clubs where there is no specific medical reason for membership
- Hair transplants
- Illegal treatments, operations, or drugs
- Insurance premiums
- Weight reduction programs for general well being
