Paul R. Berger, M.D. to Join SHPS, Inc. as Corporate Vice President, Chief Medical Officer

Louisville, Ky. (September 2, 2004) - SHPS, Inc., an integrated health management services provider based in Louisville, Ky., announced today the addition of Paul R. Berger, M.D. as corporate vice president, chief medical officer.
Berger, who has more than 30 years experience in the health care industry, will join SHPS from his previous position at Mercer Human Resource Consulting, one of the world's leading consulting organizations. At Mercer, Berger served as principal of the health care and group benefits practice and national co-leader of the health and productivity management practice.
"Paul will play a vital role at SHPS, as we continue to strengthen our position as a leader in integrated health management," said Dave Nelson, SHPS president and CEO. "Paul is an exciting addition to our executive management team. His impressive background is sure to provide immediate value to SHPS clients and strategic partners, particularly his clinical and operational expertise in the design and implementation of care management strategies."
Berger will start with SHPS in October and be charged with overseeing the clinical competencies of the organization and enhancing the company's corporate health care strategy.
In his 14 years with Mercer, Paul consulted with managed care programs on behalf of Fortune 50 companies interested in utilization review, case management and disease management. He has also served as medical director for a national HMO/PPO in Atlanta, where his responsibilities included directing the care management, performance improvement and provider relations functions.
Berger received his M.D. from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and a bachelor of arts degree from Duke University.
